The Vatican Museums contain masterpieces of work, statues, and other pieces of art collected by the popes through the centuries. The Museums include several colossal pieces of art, such as the Sistine Chapel, the Chapel of Beato Angelico, the Raphael Rooms and Loggia and the Borgia House.
The Pinacoteca, or Picture Gallery, is located in a building that dates back to 1932 and that was designed by the architect Beltrami. The Christian, Profane and Missionary-Ethnological Museum houses a collection of artistic and archaeological bits and pieces, some of an ethnological nature, that had been once housed within the Lateran Palace.
The Collection of Contemporary Religious Art had been added to the Museums during 1973. The History Museum is located in the Lateran Palace and includes, in the middle of other things, things that belonged to the Pontifical Armed Corps.
The Museums are usually open to the people each weekday morning and in the early afternoon in summer. Entrance is gratis on the last Sunday of each month.
